Our Exports
The New Zealand Times says:— The Minister of public works recently congratulated the colony on its growing prosperity, as evidenced by the returns of exports. The New Zealand Trade Review, just published for the outgoing mail, publishes figures which contrast with and contradict Mr Sedden's asser* tions. These figures show that for the last four years, ending with the Sep» tember quarter in each year, the value of exports apart from specie, was as follows : —1891-2, £9,285,884 ; 1890-90, £9.778,---951; 1889-90. £9,784,530; 1888-9. £8,811,318 The talling-off for the latest year is about £683,000. of which £470, 000 occurs in New Zealand produce, £160,000 in specie and £23,000 in the re-export trade. The chief items of shrinkage in our own produce are in meats [frozen and other), about £344,000 ; hemp, £88,000; and timber, £77,000. Several other items show a falling-off in a minor degree, and a good many exhibit an increase, Among the latter butter shows an improvement of over £70,000.
