Wellington Tragedy

(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, September 20. At the inquest to-day, Harry Smith, seaman, deposed that lie witnessed the shooting. Saw Finley with a revolver, and heard someone call to accused " You killed him." and Finley replied " I could kill any amount like him." Witness fainted on the sight of the blood rushing from deceased's mouth. W Peterson, carpenter on the barque W. B. Flint, stated that when Lynch came aboard on Sunday morning and asked for Seel he said he wanted to give him a pair of black eyes when they met. Finley was knocked down and kicked and Lynch hit Seel. Earnest Seel deposed that he was a Swede, but American by naturalisation. He got his thumb broken iv a row on Saturday night and a black eye. Finley was afraid to go aboard that night and they slept at an hotel. Witness was excited at the time and might have used the expressions attributed to him. Finley gave evidence that the first time Seel knew he had a revolver was when he saw it in witness' hand on Sun., da} morning. Seel did uot urge him to use it. The iury returned a verdict of man slaughter agaiii9t Finley, he Laving re ceived provocation, but found there was not sufficient evidence to show that Seel had encouraged Finley to fire before Greenrose's death. This Day. Notwithstanding the verdict of the jury, the police will proceed to-morrow with the charges against Finley and Seel, and the Crown Prosecutor will appear against the accused.
