The Dunechn letter in the New Zealand Mail contains a nice little strike -anecdote. It is said to have been told by a lady who interests hrrself a g>eat •deal in the poor. One night about nine •o'clack, she was called out to tbe kitchen to sre a women, wbom she was in tbe 3iabit of relieving. On entering the room *he found her protegee waiting, and -dressed all in her best. "Oh ! Mrs , "has vbur husband gone back to work ? " -*' No, Madam," replied the woman, " I have come to ask for somethine to eat. I havn't tasted bite nor sup since yesteiv *day morninsj, and I am that weak for want of food that when I went to-day to nave nip photograph taken I fa nted dead *way -"
