Education Board

The "Wnnganui Education Board met last Monday. Present — Messrs Cm-son (chair), Baker, Sanson, Yorke, Bridge, Notman, Fry, and "Rev. Mr Ross. In committee the appointments wero considered, and the following agreed to : — Kairanga, Mr H. E. Astbury ; Birmingham, Miss E. R. Low, oi' Martnu ; Hawera, Miss Hutchison as pupil teacher ; and Palmeraton North, Miss Bridget Henley as pupil teacher. The resignations of Miss McDougall (Oroua Bridge) and Miss Little (Foxton) were received, and it was resolved to send the names of Miss Prendergast and others to the Foxton Committee. Mr Oldham, of Mangaoue, to be advised that he will receive a probationership at Wanganui Boys' school as soon as a successor can be found for AJan-ao c In referring to the publication of comments of the Inspector in his reports on pupils a long discussion took place, it being held that the piaotiee caused pain and annoyance both to pupils and parents. A resolution was passed regretting their publication in the past, and notifying committees that such remarks are intended solely for the guidance of teachers. The appointment of a master for Fitzherbert School was left to the Executive Committee. In reply to the Beaconsfield Committee it was decided to state that the internal arrangements of the school are in the hands of the committee. The Cheltenham residence was leased for another three yearj, at the same rate as now paid. As to the Palmerston building Mr Bindon is to obtain full particulars respecting sites and building, and in j the meantime it will be held in abeyance. A letter was received from D. Blair, Art iSchool Inspector, complaining that only seven teachers had attended the opening of his classes, and pointing out that the chance would not. occur again Inspector Bindon strongly urged the board to place the matter before teachers. In a year or two the whole of the classes would have to take up drawing, and if the teachers were not able to draw themselves how were they to teach others. It would come to this that they would not get through themselves if they did not take the subject up. — Resolved, that Mr Bindou draw up a circular to teachers pointing out the advantages of the classes, and urging teachers to attend. On the motion of Mr Yorke, the Committee of Rules were requested to revise the scale of salaries in instances where overlapping occurred. The Board then adjourned.
