Horticultural Show

It does not appear to make any difference to shows here whether the weather be bad for weeks beforehand, or deadly frosts cut tender plants level with the ground. Under the most adverse circumstances the exhibits are bound to be above the average in quality and beauty. The show to-day, held in the new Assembly Rooms, was no exception. The flowers, collected in masses of radiant beauty, or cut and placed in 6tift rows in classes ; roses isolated yet in close juxtaposition to friends and rivals ; fragrant clusters in gorgeous table decorations, or gathered sweetly together in pale masses emblei matical of fair maids and blushing brides ; or in the more assertive hand — bouquet suggestive of floral gifts to beauty on the stage, were all good of their kind and well worthy of admiration. The collections of vegetables were very good, although their number was not so great as might be expected. The fruit was, of course, in small quantities, but what was shown appeared fair in quality. The produce table for butter, eggs, bacon, hams, bread, cheese, jams and jellies, &c, was very well filled. There was an exhibit from Mr M. Keen of a pot containing the Rose, Thistle, and Shamrock, which excited a good deal of attention, and seemed to fog the judges a little ; therefore a prize had not been awarded at the time wej went to press. The j udges were Messrs Kitnev and H. Worsfold, assisted by Mr H. L". Sherwill. Mr F. Y. Lethbridge made an efficient referee. The list of prize takers will appear in our next issue.
