Benevolent Society

The committee met at Mr Bray's s office last night. Present — Mr Bray r (chairman), Messrs Stevens (secrej tary), A. P. Webster (treasurer), Kir- .. ton and Bishop. ' A letter of thanks to the Society ' was read from Charles Gray. 1 A similar letter was also received , from Mr Lash. The following letter was read to the ' committee: — Wellington, Novr. 25, 1885. , D. H. Macarthur,. Esq., M.H.R., Palmerston North. Dear Sib, — •' To. day the sum of £34 has been remitted through the Bank of New Zealand to your credit conjointly with that of Mr Robert Linton, of Halcombe, in trust for Mr Eichard Pope, the blind-man, who went to England, and returned by. the "Rimutaka" last voyage. The unfortunate man seems to J-.ave enlisted considerable sympathy on board our steamer od her outward passage, as the officers oJ the. yessel and. his fellow-passengers subscribed the sum of £36 16s 9_4, oi which £2 16s 9£d was handed to him. I have no doubt, from the interest you took on the man's behalf in the past, .that you will undertake .to see the Dalance is properly disposed of for his benefit. — I am, &c, ; rii - Henry Rose.
