Franco-Chinese War
■ «•» (fiSUTSB's TEIEGBAMS), bovvov, August 28. Telegrams have just been received -from Foochow . Announcing that the French fleet opened the bombardment upon the Chinese arsenal near that town at 2 p.m to-day (Saturday). Latest telegrams in connection with the Franco-Chinese war give th« followiag intelligence :— Li Pong Poo, Chinese Minister, left Paris last night. Three Russian ironclads have been despatch to reinforce the Russian fl«et now cruising off the Chinese coast. The Governors of Kiranghsi and and Tuman have been ordered to proceed to Tonquin. A telegram despatched from Foochow at ten p.m. states that Admiral Courbet bombarded the Chinese arsenal near that town for three bourn, and entirely destroyed it, together with seven Chinese gunboats, which were sunk by the fire of the French ships. Two other a-unboats escaped. The European residents at. Fooelibw have not been molested, although great excitement prevails among the native population.
Received August 26, 1.30 a.m. HoNe Kong, August 25. Intelligence to hand from Foo Chow shows that only one of tke Chinese batteries by which the port is defended replied to the fire of the French fleet during the bombardment. It is reported' that one of the French war Teasels waff sank by the Chinese fire. Telegrams from Tientsing ajmonnoe that the French Charge de Affaires has left the town.
