CRICKET SEASON

HOME-AND-HOME MATCHES

The possibility of home and home matches with Auckland and Canterbury this season was discussed at a meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last night. Mr. A. W. Duncan, who has been absent from Wellington for some weeks, was in the chair for the first time.

Members pointed'out that Otago, in normal circumstances, would have met Wellington in the Plunket Shield series at the Basin Reserve this summer. , Otago, naturally, had been invited to visit Wellington for. a match whether for the shield or not. Games against Auckland and Canterbury would have been away.

It was -agreed that in view of the fact that it was trying to arrange a home and home match with Canterbury, Otago was unlikely to want to travel as far north as Wellington.

Mr. Duncan suggested that both the Auckland and Canterbury Associations should be asked to give their views, and said that it would be a wise move, if and when the matches were played, for the profits to be divided on a fifty-fifty basis instead of sixty-forty in favour of the home association, as in previous years.

Mr. A. Ronaldson agreed, and suggested that endeavours should be made to billet players wherever possible. Hotel costs, he said, invariably took a considerable proportion of the profits from the "gates."

It was decided to obtain the views of Auckland and Canterbury on the matter.

The Director of Parks and Reserves intimated that the Basin. Reserve would not be available until November 2. If, however, a match between Army and Wellington, on Labour Day, was arranged, a representative wicket at the Basin Reserve could be supplied. The committee decided to carry on with .arrangements on the assumption tli at October 19 would be the opening day of the season.

An application for senior status from the Petone Club was referred to the senior championship committee.

Mr. W. J. R. Christophersen wrote that he would be unable to undertake the duties of sole selector this- season. A new selector will be appointed at the next meeting. . ' ' .
