PRODUCER GAS
USE ENCOURAGED
The use of producer gas plants by transport companies whose licences to run services are threatened will not be considered a reason for the continuation of the licences, states the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). The use of producer gas plants was being encouraged. The Transport Department had been making investigations of the design of a plant, as it would not have "dud" plants foisted on the public. Asked if the use of the plant had been held to be no valid reason for the revocation of a transport licence, Mr. Semple said the carrying on of the licence depended on the value of the service to the public. If a service were essential, it would be encouraged, not discouraged, but the transport owner could not use a producer gas plant as a reason why he should receive differential treatment.
"We cannot allow a lot of persons to use the plants for unnecessary services and create unfair competition with others, who were probably on the road before them," the Minister said 'Producer gas is not going to be abused It is going to be used for the legitimate- transport of the country."
