VETERAN FISHERMAN

DEATH OF "FRENCH LOUIS"

The death occurred yesterday in Wellington of a picturesque character at Makara, Leopold Haupois, more familiarly known as "French Louis/ He was in his eighty-eighth year, and was a popular figure at Makara, being eagerly sought by visitors with cameras. Lord Bledisloe. when he was Governor-General of the Dominion, was amongst the photographers of "French Louis," and he sent the old fisherman a framed copy which adorned his cabin.

It was in 1880 that Leopold Haupois arrived in New Zealand. He had gone to sea at the age of 10, and was on the barque Beatrice which brought a load of railway, iron to New Zealand. Liking the look of the country, he decided to remain, and for a time worked on the Manawatu Railway which was then in course of construction. Subsequently he. took, up fishing as his occupation, eventually retiring to Makara, where for the last 25 years or so he had occupied a cabin. In his younger days Leopold Haupois was a strong swimmer, and even as an old man he thought nothing of the walk from Makara to the city and back.
