NIGGER BOY SUCCEEDS

HAWKE'S BAY RACES

SAINT TOR BEST JUVENILE

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

HASTINGS, October 3

Nigger Boy, who attracted attention to his early prospects when finishing on third at Marton recently, scored his-, first success in the Sleeveless colours at Hastings today when he annexed the* Flying Handicap, for which he was c? warm favourite. The former South Islander was always trailing the two leaders, Vascones and Heroic Maid, in the running, and when Heroic Maid dropped out a' furlong from home he went up and challenged Vascones, the pair fighting out an excellent finish with the verdict going to Nigger Boy by a neck. Lam-, bourn came from the middle of the field to secure third money, and Native Song was a useful fourth. Heroic Maid was next, with Rakahanga and Lindrum at the head of the others. Lucullus Boy missed the jump at the start. I MASTER CYKLON BEST. There was practically no pace on inthe early stages of the Spring Handicap, and the race really developed into little more than a half-mile sprint. Hunting Cat and Gay Mimic mademost of the running, but there was] never more than a couple of lengths separating the four horses, -and when* the real issue came to be decided iri» the straight Master Cyklon ran on too' solidly for the remainder and won* comfortably by a length from Aurora's] Star, who made a last-minute bid to secure second place. Neither Hunting Cat nor Gay Mimic ever looked like winning over the closing stage. SAXON TOR'S BROTHER. Tetratina was made favourite but not at cramped odds in the Hastings Stakes, but she was completely routed by Saxon Tor's full-brother Saint Tor. who was having his first start. These two horses quickly opened a gap on the rest of the field and they had the race to themselves, the colt having the situation well in hand before reaching the straight. . Erin's Court was finishing on third, with Varuna and Flying Spray best of the others. Saint Tor appears to have all the brilliance of his brother, who has been the best of the Leighons to date. Bred by Mr. G. Wells, of Feilding, he was bought at the January sales for 200 guineas by Mr. J. Macdonald, of Pirinoa, and he is a member of A. C. Plummer's team at Awapuni. THE MINOR EVENTS. High Peer, having his third start from H. Dulieu's stable was a comfortable winner of the Hollycombe Hurdles. -Son and Heir would have been second but for a bad jump along the back.1 Two of the less-fancied division paid the dividends in the Imperial Plate, Ashaboy and Battlegain, from the inside positions, leading all the way Grand Chase, Oragon, Silverhope," JUminola, and Singapore headed the others. Ashaboy, a four-year-old gelding, is the first of the progeny of the bky-rocket horse Skycracker to win. ;™ °Y.? + V 1*' ']? aS: k- from steeplechasT?£'«£ ut Txas!?. d her opposition in the SB!*? » % ni^ ap -' .le?vin§ Morning Flight and Solaria in the straight and scoring by six lengths. ♦wi" 1!!* 1"5 benefi, t °f a 71b apprentices allowance, the topweight, Smiling Personality, was in front from 5f^ er"r^ m thJ -Ot.ane Hack Handicap. Khurja finishing well, was a good second, with Roeon, always nrominent, third, and the favourite, Laughing Song, fourth, ahead of Chandlefy, Kadina, and Kintyre, the last-named trio being likely early improvers.
