MRS. J. A. LEE AT NORTHLAND

Mrs. J. A. Lee delivered an address at Mrs. W. E. Connor's residence, Putnam Road, on Tuesday afternoon. Many aspects of the Labour Government's legislation were dealt with.

The policy of the housing department was in direct contrast to that followed by private property owners, said Mrs. Lee. In the past it had been impossible for people with children to get any consideration from landlords, but the Government's policy was to reserve the State houses for tenants with children. The whole idea of Labour was security. "If the birth-rate is to rise," said Mrs. Lee, "we must have security." Women were entitled to happiness through motherhood, and that happiness was impossible without improvement in environment. "Under Labour rule slums will be a thing of the past in a very few years," said Mrs. Lee.

Mrs. Lee contended that the cost of living had not risen nearly as much as some candidates would have electors believe and quoted figures in support of her assertion. As proof that New Zealand was enjoying greater prosperity than ever before Mrs. Lee drew attention to the annual report of the Wellington Automobile Association published in Tuesday's "Evening Post." The report showed a record subscription revenue of over £8000, and an increase in membership of 1300, and similar increases were reported from all over New Zealand.

Mrs. Lee, who was speaking in support of Mrs. C. Stewart's candidature for Wellington West, was warmly thanked for her address, and gratitude was expressed to Mrs. Connors for the use of her delightful home.
