REMEDYING THE LAW

PROBLEM OF JURY SYSTEM

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 8.

Agreement with the need to banish the growing trend for more ease and luxury and fewer children, and approval of amendments to the law and the provision of any practical means to encourage motherhood and healthy children, were expressed by the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. FraserX at a meeting of 500 women at Stratford today. - After addresses by Dr. Doris Gordon, Mrs. Helen Wilson', 0.8. E., and Mr. Fraser, -the meeting . passed .a, resolu-. tion asking' the Government to set up a commission with a Supreme Court Judge as chairman, 'to recommend legislation to overcome the evils of abortion

Mr. Fraser said a commission was not necessary to remedy the law. How far Parliament would be willing to go towards weakening the jury system was a question for Parliament, but it was a problem that must be faced. "It is a very serious i-eflection on the jury system." added Mr. Fraser, "and much to be deplored that any person should have a reasonable certainty of avoiding the consequences of guilt."
