EXPENSES WELL DOWN

NET GAIN, £66,000

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, sth February

Up till 2nd January in the present financial year the working expenses of tho railways had been reduced by approximately one million pounds, said Mr. P. G. Roussell, General Manager of Railways, to-day. There had been a fall of about £900,000 in revenue, however, so that the net gain would bo about £66,000.

Questioned whether further economies were to be enforced by tho Department, Mr. Roussell said:—"Our aim is by ceaseless investigation, to explore every avenue of economy as long as it does not affect the efficiency of the service to the public or the usual high standards of safety."

As for branch lines, tho board was anxious to keep every line open that would pay operating expenses, Mr. Roussell said.. The board would be guided by the position as disclosed at the end of the financial year.
