THE SEA BED
SOUNDINGS BY.CUMBERLAND
According to soundings taken by the steamer Cumberland, the sea-bed four miles off the Napier., foreshore is at its normal depth, 14 fathoms. The Cumberland called at Napier on her ■way from Auckland to Wellington, and Captain MacMillan, master of the vessel, stood by to offer any assistance that his ship could give. Ho communicated with / H.M.S. Diomede and the Northumberland' by wireless, and his offer of stores was gratefully accepted. The- principal need, however, was for medical assistance, and as the Cumberland could not help in that way she continued on her voyage to Wellington. When the Cumberland arrived off Napier at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday the town was burning freely, but the flames had just about run their course when she left at a.bout 10.20 a.m. yesterday. She arrived at Wellington this morning.
