BIG CYCLE MEETING
KEEN RACING EXP.ECTED SUSPENSION OF EIDERS
Two winners of Wellington provincial cycle championships lust season, J. Footo and D. Evans, will not be defending their titles at1 the provincial meeting at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon as a result of their association with the Port Nicholson Club (N.Z.U.C.)., It is understood that Pootc desires to change: back to the control of tho N.Z.AiA.A. He has made an application in this direction to tho Wellington Contre, but his case, along with those of seven others, who have apparently also ha,d enough of the N.Z.U.C. organisation, has not yet been considered by the Cycling Sub-commit-tee of tho Centre, and he will be unable to ride on Saturday.
At this week's meeting of the Wellington Centre, in addition to the application made by Foote, the following applications ,to have the suspension imposed on thorn when they joined up with the N.Z.U.C, lifted were tabled: W. Sutherland, G. Orr, A. Pennington, Q. Pcnnington, A. J. Dickey, J. M'Cabe, it. Churchen, ami L. Koborts. The cases of Sutherland and Orr had been considered by- the Cycling Sub-commit-tee, and the.Centre decided to recommend to the Council of the N.Z.A.A.A. that their suspension should be lifted. Neither they'nor any others whose cases.might .be favourably considered will be able to take part in N.Z.A.A.A. meetings, however, until such time as the Council endorses the Centre's action.
The championships On Saturday give promise of some very fine contests, with perhaps some of the younger riders doing very well. For both A and B grade riders thero are three championship events, the distances being 880 yards-, one mile, and three miles. The meeting: will bo started at 1 o'clock .with-the three miles-events, in which it has'been found necessary to run heats on account of the number of entries. It.was pointed out at the meeting of the Wellington Centre this week that if a rider, either in the A grade or the B grade competed in each of the three events, heats included, he would have to ride about nine miles. The chairman (Mr. A. C. Kitto) stated that H© did not consider it advisable
to start twelve riders off the 'mark at the one time at Athletic Parky and-for,-that reason it had been decided to have heats. He agreed that the befter plan would'have been to have decided the heafs before the mooting, but that was not practicable this year, although it would' have to be considered for future championship meetings. The present holders of provincial titles are as follow: — A Oracle. 880 yards:-M. Ganc (Wellington), linin 17 l-ssec One mile: T. Oakley (Wairarapa), 2min 7sec. Three miles: JV Foote (Athletic), 6min 38 4-sscc. B Grade. 880 yards: D. Evans (Olympic), lmin 7sec. One mile: D. Evans, 15sec. Three miles: D. Evans, 7min 35 4-ssec.
