EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHEISTCHUECH, This Day. The earthquake and later a fire which destroyed his shop were given as the causes of his failure by Malcolm M'Lean, storekeeper, of Karamea, who met 23 creditors to-day. The total debts to unsecured creditors Wore £.8096, and to secured creditors £1760. The value of real estate owned by the bankrupt was assessed at £4140 and of securities £2181. The total deficiency was, according to the bankrupt, £1346. After a long examination it was decided to allow the bankrupt to keep his furniture. The Official Assignee said he intended to take a legal opinion to see what should- be done for the benefit of the creditors. The Assignee was given power to dispose of the bankrupt's assets.
