FIERCE BATTLE IN DARK

DELHI, 29th April. Two were killed and many injured in rioting at Madras when the polieo opened fire on a mob of over five thousand who attacked thorn with stones, following a meeting in connection with tho civil disobedience campaign. Scores of police officers and mea were injured by istoues, including the British Commissioner and Deputy Assistant Commissioner. Rioters also jeered and stoned Europeans in motorcars. .Mounted polieo drove the mob on to the beach, where a fierce battle occurred in the darkness. Later, the rioters returned to town, where there was more stoning of tho police, who Opened fire on four' occasions, finally dispersing the crowd, aided by a detachment of the Middlesex Regiment.
