FIRST MEETING

SHOPS AND OFFICES

COMMITTEE

The special committee appointed by the Government to make an investigation of the Shops and Offices legislation with a view' to clarifying and simplifying, it held its first. meeting at Parliament House to-day. The committee consists of Messrs. A. J. Murdoch, M.P. (Chief Government Whip), C. H. Clinkard, "M.P./ H; Holland, M.P., E. J. Howard, M.P.j A. W. 'Croskery (representing the shop assistants' organisation), A. S. Cookson (representing tho 'employers), S. Eldridgo (representing small shopkeepers), and Mr. Newton (Secretary of tho Labour Department). In the unavoidable absence to-day of Mr. Cookson, the employers wero temporarily j represented, by Mr. T. O. Bishop. Mr.1! Murdoch was appointed chairman. The objects of the inquiry were briefly outlined by tho Minister of Labour, (the Hon. W. A. Veitch). It was decided to commence the hearing of Wellington evidence next Tuesday, 6th May. Meetings will be hold'daily until Thursday, when an adjournment will be made to Dunedin, where evidence will be taken on 12th, 13th, and 14th May. ' It is proposed also to .visit Christchureh and Auckland, and the balance of the Wellington evidence will be done subsequently. It is not proposed to1 visit any other towns unless a considerable quantity of evidence-is offered.
