FRENCH TUG'S DOUBLE EESCUB
PARIS, 9th December. A stirring story of a double rescue was told by the officers of the Trench salvage-tug Iroise, which put to sea on oth December in search of the steamer Helen, which was reported to bo in distress south of Ushant. The Helen's hold was found to bo full of water and engines out of commission. The Iroiso passed a cable aboard, but it broke in the darkness while making for Brest. The Helen drifted rapidly towards the Armcn Kocks and began to sink. The Iroise picked up the crew, with the exception of one officer. , She- had scarcely finished tho rescue when she received an S.O.S. from the Danish freighter Galdana, which she succeeded in bringing safely to port. The Iroise now has set out again in reply to signals from the British, steamers Alba and Tynebridge, and tho Italian vessel Senatoro Dali.
A trawler picked up the six survivors of the Italian steamer Chieri, which sank off Ushant. Forty of the crew were drowned.
A newspaper aeroplane reached Le Bourget, despite the storm in the Channel, with which the pilot had a four hours' battle.
