SUCCESSFUL OPENING
CANADA LINKED WITH ENGLAND
(United Press Association. —Copyright.) VANCOUVER, 19th October.
At 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, London time, Mr. Marconi will officially open the Canada-England link in the beam wireless chain, sending from the General Post Office in London to the Marconi office in Montreal a short congratulatory message to the local staff f r the manner in which the tests were carried out recently. These fulfilled the guarantee' speed of 1250 letters per minute in each direction, which fa equal 'to 2500 per minute over the complete circuit. These speeds were maintained for many hours. The speed of signalling, calculated on a basis of every hour during the seven days of the test, was 600 letters per minute in each • direction, or 1200 per minute for the complete circuit. The officials say that the beam wireless system will be capable of handling all traffic between Canada and Britain for years to come. The system will be open for public business on 25th October, and in the meantime a private service will be maintained, enabling Mr. Mackenzie King to communicate with his Government at Ottawa on matters relative to the Imperial Conference. It is intimated that preliminary tests will be proceeded with immediately between England and South Africa, using the same stations (Bodmin and Bridgewater) for Capetown, where the receiving and transmitting stations are said to be practically complete.
