SUBURBAN COUNCILS. LAST NIGHT'S MEETINGS.
PETONE. , Last night's meeting of the Petone Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors R. W. Short, H. Harding, R. J. Southgato, C. B. Brocklebank, J. Piper, H. G. Young, J. List, R. Jones, and W. Trueman. Intimation wa_ received from the ,Police Department that it regretted that the matter of connecting the Petone police station with the telephone bureau must remain in abeyance. The clerk was instructed to again make application and write fully in support of the request. The Government Insurance Department notified that it had been advised by the Public Trustee that the instalments of sinking funds — £24 19s sd, £37 9s Id, and £37 9s Id respectively — due on 21sfc ultimo, had not been received by him. It was decided to pay the money forthwith. Application v/as made by R. J. Xankiville to lease that portion of the recreation ground known ac the ridge, and situated at the extreme southern end of the ground, for a period of twelve months at a rental of £5. It was resolved that the offer be not entertained. The management of the Petone Palace Theatre applied for permission to exhibit moving pictures of an appropriate nature on Good Friday, in its theatre. The council resolved to accede to the request. Three cases of scarlet fever in different families were reported by local medical officers. Union stated that he had seen the borough solicitor. Mr. Kirk appeared to be under the impression that the union had perused and approved the draft copy of the agreement. As a matter of fact the agreement had been before a committee of the union, and one or two alterations were thought necessary. As soon as the union's solicitor had looked through it he would communicate with tho council again as to its ideas. The letter was received, the Mayoi intimating that the alterations were of minor importance. Permission was granted to the Petone Wednesday Hockey Club to use a ground on tho recreation reserve for their matches during the coming season. R. Tune applied for, and was granted, a permit — subject to the engineer's approval — to erect a boat shed on the Petone foreshore.
