CONCERT.

A very successful concert was held in the Town Hal! on Wednesday evening last, on beha'f of the Clyde Cricket Club. This Club, sinning in good company, has been living beyond its means for some years past. The Committee deeming it unfair to ask 'he present members to makespecial subscription among themselves ,to pay off old debts which they had had really no share in contracting. Moreover, it being agre-d that considerable sport was afforded by the matches to many ,of the puidic, from whom no monetary help was received, and further, being pressed by their energetic secretary, Mr Keele, they resolved to ask their musical friends to assist them by a concert on the race night, this turned out a complete success, as before remarked, a sum of something like Lrs being realised, and it is hoped that with this sum the Clyde Cricket Club will now be able to meet the season with a clear balance sheet. Shortly after 8 o’clock the hall was filled. The entertainment began with a pianoforte Duet from “Maritana” by Mrs Hickson and Miss Jessett. These ladies also played another duet “ Fairy Queen,” and accompanied in turn the various songs Miss Jessett performed “Selections of Irish and Scotch Airs.” We do not feel competent to make any worthy criticism of the brilliant p'aying of tlnse ladies ; hat.we are only echoing the applause of the audience when we tender them a hearty welcome to Clyde, and express the hope that we may have the opportunity of listening again to their music at concerts yet to come. Mr F, Williams may bo always sure of a welcome from Clyde audiences. He has the happy knack of always choosing a class of songs which is popular. His choice this time felt upon Sailing. Anchored, Ruby, hand The idshipmate Mr Hueston sang ‘•True till Death,” and “ The Jolly Miller.” very creditably A pretty quartette, “ Good Night Beloved,” was sung by Mrs Shaw, Miss Jesset and Messrs Stevens an'd'Turtoh. Mr J. S. Hickson fairly delighted the audience with his comic vendition of ‘l’m not myself at all’ ‘Nothing else to do,’ and ‘ I’ve, lost my child.’ It was a treat to hear Mrs thaw’s rich and rare voice again in ‘Yesterday,’ ‘Excelsior,’ and ‘Laddie.’ Turton’s robust tenor was heard to advantage in For Love Alone, from the Sorcerer, and the Stirrip Cap. The duet :of Fairy Wind fmm Maritana, sang by Miss Jesset and Mr Stevens was one of the best pieces of music of the evening. At the close Mr Fraser the President of ‘ he club in a few well chosen words, thanked the audience and those who had contribited their assistance towards the evening enjoyment. We take the opportunity of tendering a little advice to the Club. While it numbers amongst its members some experienced, cricketers, and has ample material for a very'effective team ; yet it cannot hut have been apparent to visitors at our matches that puny of the players were rusty, out oif p-actioe. let the O.C C take heart of grace pf tha kindly help given them, and its members be more frequently seen at the daily practise.
