in liberating the Christians of the East, She Las not only by word, hut also by act, maintained her conviction that the only way to solve the eastern question is to emancipate the Christians from Turkish rale, and a firm determination to plant the Cross on the tower of St. Sophia, in the p'ace of the Crescent. Russia’s road to gain her aim is difficult. It has cost her enormous sacrifices; but these have consecrated Russia for ever, therefore it is impossible tor her to give up her ancient policy. If other countries do not object to Christians being under Mussulman rule, Russia does. There is no vacillation in her policy. Postponement does not betoken any desire on her part to give up the attempt to gain her object. Europe ought to know this, and ought to conform her action in the East to suit the requirements of Russia's national policy. .As long as this is done Russia will not break the peace of Europe.
