LICENSING COURTS.

ALEXANDRA,

The annual Ucening Meeting for the Borough of Alexau ira was held in the U'urt House, Alexandra, on Monday lost the 7th inst.

G. N. McDonald, Esq., (the Chairman], read the report for the year, from which it appeared that there had been a eons! -erable decrease in tbe number of convictions for drunkenness, for the present year up till date there having been none, M r McDonald highly complimented Constable ißridgeman for the highly efficient manner he had discharged his duties during his residence in Alexandra.

The following applications were then dealt with and granted:— Henry Tohiil, Criterion Hotel. L G. Ryan, Bendigo Hotel. Sarah Cameron, Caledonian Hotel.

Wholesale bottle licences were also granted to R. Finlay, J, Rivers, and W. Theyers.

DUNSTAN DISTRICT.

The above Committee sat in the Court House, Clyde, on Tuesday list, the Bhj inst. Present : Mes-rs A. A. Oliver (Chairman), S. Welsford, A. Joss. andT H. Bell,

The Clerk having read the minutes of the preceding meeting, Mr Inspector Hickson aai 1 it afforded him pleasure to remark that for the yeaonly one case of drunkenness had oecnrro' in the district, whilst for the past year there had been eight cases ; and further remarked that the houses had been remarkably well conducted.

The application of Mr J. Holt for a general night license, was cal lei on. Mr F. J. Wilson, solicitor, who .appeared for this aoplicant, sail he would ask for this as we ! as all other houses in Clyde, au II o’clock license.

Mr Inspector Hickson most strenuously opposed 11 o’clock licenses, maintaining that 10 o’clock was late enough for every requirement. H“ said it might be urged that 10 o’clock was ton early for the tra veiling pun’ic; hut the travelling public and the hotelkeepers were wall aware that houses had been opened to them at all hours, and in- deoi ling this question the Comrai’tee ha I nob to consider it from a revenue point of view, or reklly as to whioh hoar w is the most suitable

Mr Wilson said if the question wan going to he considered ha would ask that the evidence of those interested be taken before a decision was given. The Chairman nai l there was nothing in the Act to the eff-.ct that the-Bauch had to hear the hotelkeepers. Mr Wilson: That may he; but it has been laid down by the Ju iges that a Com-mute-is a Court of Justice, and there are au-di things as mandamus to compel justice to he meted nut. After further discussion.

George Field—Accommodation License, Butc'-er’s Gn ly. Mr Wilson asked for a reduction of the license fee f.-i.m LIO.

After a long talk it was decided that the fee he 1,12.

Mrß. Naylor - Wholesale License, Clyde. Granted.

MATAKA.NUI AND MANUHERIKfA DISTRICTS.

These meetings were held on Thursday last, the 10th inst., in the Court House. Ophir, Messrs J. C. Jones, Barren, Fitz gerald, Cotlinghum, and Harrington, in attendance, of whom Mr Jones occupied the chair, and the following licenses were granted : Mr* Gavan—General license, Ophir. J. W. il'lntosh —General license, Ophir. J. Pitch-a—Boltie license, Ophir - R. Sheppard—General license. Tinkers. H. Duck— General license, Drytrrca-1. J. Darlington Accommodation license, Ida Valley. J. Heyward Accommodation license, Chatto Creek.
