A LYNCHING MOB FOILED.

On the morning of the 6th December (says the Genville-Texas correspondent of a New York paper), about 2 o’clock, a body of mounted men raided the Hunt County Gaol here, and made a demand upon gaoler Adair for a prisoner named fietny Shamburger, who is awaiting trial on a charge of having outraged and murdered Miss Annie Smith about three months ago. The galor barricaded his doors and threatened to shoot 'he first man who entered The mob laughed at his threats, and, procuring a heavy plank, they proceeded to 1 atter down the main door. After gaining entrance they seiz d the gaoler, and gave him ten minutes to bring out the murderer, threatening to hang him if he refused. The cum. ning old gaoler begged piteously for his life, and wanted to be left alone tbat he might commune with himself during the ten minutes allotted him. Tills touching plea was granted, and the mob withdrew, the leader holding an open-faced silver watch in his hand. Adair gathered up his firearms when left alone and crept to the roof of the gaol, where he alarmed the sleeping town by firing his Wincheater rifle in rapid succession. The twemyvsix men realised that one old veteran had outwitted them. They opened fire on Adair, who returned it with a vengeance. In a lew minutes a hundred citizens were at the scene, all armed to the teeth The leader of the mob angrily ordered his men to mount, and forming a solid square, the cavalcade moved to the northwest, returning the fire of the citizens as they retreated. When daylight broke the pathway of the mob could be plainly followed for a mile by the largo droj s of blood which were found naming in three parallel lines, showing that three men were badly wounded. There were twelve prisonersin the gaol, two of whom wore frightened into hysterics by the melee. Shamborger, the alleged murderer, was found crouched down in one corner of the iron cage, almost paralysed with fear and; in a semi-idiotio state of mind The attack upon the avengers was regai ded as a great mis* take, as they are now certain to return and stores the gaol at the hazard of every one of their lives. The mob was composed of respectable farmers and cattlemen residing in the country some twelve miles from here, where the murder of Miss Smith occurred.
