(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). Dunedin, January 25, 7.45 p-m. The steamer Bombay arrived from Lons don yesterday, after passage, 56 days. The balance-sheet of Colonial Bank for the half-year is issued. It proposes to pay a dividend of of seven per cent. The Presbyterian Synod closed its sittings. Rev. Mr Ross, of Queenstown, was Dominated as moderator for next year. Phelan, the swimmer, attempted to from Dunedin to Port Chalmers vesterday, but only got as far as Sawyers Bay. He was 44 hoars in the water. A meeting of the N Z. Pottery Co. was held yesterday, when it was stated that, the probable loss would be about 16s per £1 share. John Newton, of Nevis, now in prison for indecent assault, received first instalment of uis whippings yesterday. A boy named Mechain was drowned whilst bathing at Woodviile yesterday: W. S. N. Connell for attempted arosn has been committed for trial at Christchurch. Accounts are to hand from various places that there is a change in the weather. Today in Dunedin is a regular hot summer day and signs of its lasting. In Supreme Court to day, the Corporation obtained verdict for L 1509 against J. M. Massey, late Town Clerk, for debentures stolen. James McDonald, M. H.R., was charged at ihe Police Court to-day with failing to furnish statement under the Property Assessment Act. After long discussion the case was adjourned till 5 hj February. A new school house resilience is to be erected at Matakanui. The Intercolonial bow ing match was played to-day, and won by New Zealand by 9 points. A telegram from Bendigo -to-day says : The new find at north boundary of Cromwell 6. M. Company’s clai m ia 18 inches thick, and carries good gold.
