Auckland, February 19. William Henry Crossly, sou of a deceased clergyman, has been sentenced to two months for vagrancy. He had represented himself as a detective from Christchurch in search of an offender, and victimised the public-houses. He had only been acquitted at the last sessions of the Supreme Court on a technical point for kindred practices. At the first meeting of the Auckland University Colle/e, over which Judge Gil ies presided. Sir George O’Rorke was elected president of the Council. Napier, February 19 Tawhaio is en route for Tahorate, where enlarge mnanga house has been erected and other extensive preparations made for his reception. A curious verdict was given in the Dis *rict Court to-day. A groom employed by vlrJ. B. Braitliwaite was charged with cutting up his livery and doing other damage He was seen to do it, admitted the ’offence to the police, and in the Court his counsel admitted it, only pleading drunkenness as an excuse, yet the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, evidently to the intense surprise of the prisoner. A meeting of tie Reception Committee was held tonight, and resolved to take steps to receive His Excellency the Governor with a public demonsiration of the usual character, followed by a banque-t and ball. Endeavours are being made to get the Horticultural Society to hold a show in the new Garrison Hall on the occasion. Bluff, February 19 The day after leaving Melbourne J. W. Stock, a steerage passenger, was missed from the Manapouri, He is supposed to have gone overboard From his letters on board it appears that he was an employe of the Government printing office in Melbourne.
