BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly Balcluth'a Borough Council was held ou Wednesday, when there were .present Councillors G. W. Wood, W. G, Finn, S. White, .1, Landels, J. O'Connor, D. Watt ami G. Downes.

In the absence of the Mayor and' Deputy 'Mayor, 'Councillor Wood was elected chairman. CORRESPONDENCE.

Town clerk, Hamilton 'Borough Oounc'il, wrote asking the council to cooperate in an attempt to have the import diuty removed! from cement.—(Received 1 .

Town clerk, El'Miam Borough Council, forwarded a copy of resolution regard•in# alien immigration, asking that it be prohibited until the country has accomim'odated all the Britisli immigrants wild are willing to come 'here.—'Received.

'The 'Prime Minister and Minister of Labour (Hon. W. H. Herries) acknowledged' receipt of resolution regarding Saturday 'half-holiday. If there is a general desire for a 'Dominion 'half-holi-day tHie question will be considered 'by the Goveriiiment.—Received.

C. J. Baker, district engineer, notified that £3OO subsidy had 'been issued on amount of £3OO paid bv council, and £ for £ subsidy would' 'be .paid to complete protective work's.—'Received. F, J. Ramsay, 'interim' secretary to the Rivers 'Coimmission Report Committee, wrote asking the council for a contribution of £2O for initial expense. The ■sum- of £l.lO was asked- from local ■bodies interested.—The chairman said the commission' could not visit Balc hit ha, so it Was thought advisable to send the committee to Wellington,— Councillor Waft inroved that a vote of np to £2O ibe 'made, to 'be drawn as required, and the motion was carried. Mrs Purvis asked! the council Whether any purchaser of her verandah cottage would 'be permitted to remove it.—Heidi over 'till inquiry was made into the position'. Secretary, Board of Trade, wrote notifying t'he council that it was authorised to deal wit'h all applications for oration of essential 'buildings in tlie district.—'Received. W. ,T. Lowe, secretary, Kaitangata School Committee, wrote conveying the committee's appreciation of the arrangements carried out in eonnec'tioiii with the visit of the Prince of Wales.— Received. The District Health Officer forwarded bacteriological and cliemiieal analyses of a sample of tiie water taken 'by Inspector Armour. The an'aily'sis is distinctly good, and-, provided the standard' of purity is maintained, denotes an.excellent drinking water.' It is a soft water, and will require n'o lime 'treatment to render it goodi for all dto-•m-estic purposes. It is an excellent drinking water. The nitrates present and stable in most waters are almost non-existent in this water. The Mayor and council are to be congratulated on the supply. 'Tho 'Health Officer suggested. that further samples be analysed' at regular intervals as a routine safe measure. The acquisition of so desirable a water should 'mean a rapid increase in the water reticulation- of the town and probably a demand for water carriage drainage conveniences.—Received. C. E. Naish wrote offering to give a number of ornamental trees and shrubs to be planted for t'he future 'beautifying and benefit of t'he town. The only condition was that a man should assist in 'lifting the plants-. The writer would .be pleased to confer with the council and give his advice with regard to tlie planting.—Councillor White moved that t'he council accept the offer with thanks, and left to the reserve committee to plant out.—Carried.

Secretary, Clu'tha Dairy Co., Ltd'., wrote- a>sking permission to erect on office and boiler-house■ on their promises.—Granted, subject to Board of Trade approval. Secretary, 'library ctoni'mittee, -wrote drawing attention 'to tiro necessity of repairing t'lic floor of the reading-room at tlie library.—Councillor Watt moved that t'lie works' committee carry out the repairs.—The motion 1 was carried.
