KAITANGATA CREEK.

A meeting of the Committee appointed lur carry ing out the works in connection with the deepening, and -straightening of ihe creek from Kai-tangn-tn Lake to the Molyneux -River, was held in the Granton Pier Hotel on M"i>n&ay last. There was a full attendance, Mr A. Landells presiding. Afrer the confirmation of the minutes "of previous meeting, the Chairman ex]>lained that the meeting had been called ■'for tlie. purpose of considering a report •by the Provincial Engineer. The report , was as follows : — ! Kaitangata Dake Drainage. •"To the Secretary for Works. In accord mcc with yout memo. 4th February, -187G, I have now to report having visited Kaitangata, aud met Messrs Landells, Aitchison, &c, with reference to the drainage of the Lake, , •and caused certain levels and measurements to be taken by Mr Smaill, Distriot Engineer, in connection thero with. I find the length of the Creek, (see tracing), from A to D, (along the present creek from the lake to the river), to he" fully one mile ; and at , low water of ordinary spring tides, surface of Water at D, (near "foot of the lake), is 2ft. 3in. •higher than at A, (outlet of river). Duration of tide I- find is six hours ; range of tide at D, 3in. and at A 2ft. Gin. ; depth of water in lake at the •soath end is about 2ft., but varies.

■The sectional area of creek has been measured, •and velocity of discharge, when of average size, ■ascertained; velocity, 50ft. per minute, equal to 2,700 c. teet, 16,875 gallons.

•Plans and sections have been prepared, sufficient to guide the settlers or their engineer in •carrying out the proposal for drainage, but I Ihave not Qeemetl it necessary at present to get ready the details of the work, but beg to reconi'"niend as follows : —

I cannot recommend cutting new channel such as D E .(a straight channel from the lake to the ■ river at a point about midway between the Government township and Granton), on tracing, solely on account of the cost, a rough estimate of "which, "is— channel, 160 x 3ft 6in. ... £900 At CluthaTßiver, self-acting sluice-gates 400 £ <3-ates at mouth of creek, and closing entrance 200 £1200 'But I would advise, aud the settlers, I believe, "will agree to the constructing at mouth of present creek self-acting sluices of capacity equal to at least twice average discharge •of creek, and •cutting new channel as AC (across the neck of •the peninsula at the entrance of the river)., on tracing, and filling in old bed where necessary, as at Bor C (channel round peninsula). This • should not cost over £500, and will, I anticipate, secure the partial drainage of Kaitangata Lake, and prevent the Clutha from damming back the -creek during flood. -.(Signed) *W. Akthur, Provincial Engineer. -6lh April, 1876. After consideration, it was agreed that the recommendations of the Engineer be given effect to-, and tlie Chairman was instructed to wait upon Mr Arthur, with a view tp having- the nexessary plans and specifications prepared, bo ihut' the wjjrk mig-ht be proceeded with as soon as possible. The meeting then adjourned.
