Fined For Using Cement Without Permit
- • Using cement without having first obtained a permit cost James iviartin, Levin-, £4; when he was charged in the Magistrate's Court, Levin, yesterday under the Supply Control Reguiations, 1939. Mr. G. I. McGregor prosecuted and Mr. J. Todd appeared for defendant. It was stated by Mr. McGregor that two tons of -cement had been used by defendant in the construction of paths and a f ront fence. No permit had been sought for the. work. For 'defendant, Mr. Todd said that his client had been previously farming at Manakau and had purchased the cement for the construciion of small bridges on his farm. Owing to the delay in delivery 'he had been forced. to use other materials for the j.ob and when he later decided to build a home.ln Levin he had, .used the cement for paths, a purpose Which today was permissible. The fence whi'ch had been bui-lt was only 15 inches high. There were instajices in Levin where large quantities of cement were to be used — one of some ten tons for swimming bath extensions and a two storey concrete building, continued Mr. Todd, and the people felt it was diffieult tc 1 respect the law in view of these cases. "There wa& such a thing as canceiling an order and if defendant found that -he had not needed the cement for the origina] i job on" Ihe farm he should have taken thut course-," said Mr. A.
