Deliberate Destruction Of Tiles For Houses
SYDNEY, Nov. 29. Enough tiles to roof between 60 and 70 homes are lying broken on Bydney wharf. The destruction is said to have been deliberate because the tiles wert made in Italy. It is estimated that of 125,000 tiles in a consignment about half have been destroyed. The tiles are im. heaps on the wliarf and in the shed, and there appears to have been little attempt to staek them. A distributor who is snpervising the salvage of good tiles said the consignment comprised lirst-elass red unglazed terracotta tiles costing between £6000 and £7000 which arrived from Italy by the. ship ContineiitaL They were in good condition when the ship arrived, and the men had been shown how to handle them. Previous consignments from other eountries had never suli'ered more than 20 per cent damage. At present home builders in Sydney face a 18 months' wait for tiles.
