Borough Administration
The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor,- Mr. . D. A. Fltzgerald, presided over Cbrs. B. Clayton, V. J. Batem^n, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, , L. G.- Sayer, C. G. Wishart and H. Aitehison. A letter was repeived from the town Clerk, Auckland, asking if the council would be represented at the municipal conference, which is- to be held in that city during March of ^ next year. It wt as re- ' solved to hold the matter over until a later meeting.
A communication was received [rom the director-general of the Department of Lands and Survey advising that the question of tree . planting on Crown reserves in the Mangahao area was. . investigated by the department, but in view of the nature of the areaS concerned and the poor access thereto, the department considered that they were unsuitable for afforestation purposes. Following a short discussion, it was agreed toi hold the matter over for further consider- • ation. ' On the motion of ihe Mayor it was resolved that the question of the Margaret Street water supply be lef t in the hands of the water works committee to deal "with. The chairman of the ' cemetery and reserves committee, Cr. Clayton, reported on work in hand in cleaning up the cemetery grounds and said arrangements would. be made for the cutting of the grass in the section next. to the municipal buildings. The chairman of the building committee, Cr. V. J. Bateman, tabled a plan and specifications for the erection of a dwelling. These being in order, the neeessary building permit was granted. Two requests for cemeht permits were left in the hands of Cr. Bateman, to deal with. Cr. Downes, acting chairman of the library committee, advised that the library was progressing well and there was nothing of impottance to report. Cr. Sayer, chairman of the works committee, stated that the installation of lights in the domain pavilion would be an advantage to those sports organisMions using the domain. Cr. Aitcpson agreed with Cr. Sayer on the subject and the matter was left in,;the hands of Gr. Bateman to/ihy^tigate. Mr. V. J. Cottle, when it was suggested that the council -send a deputation to discuss the matter at the meeting of the hospital 'board on November 28. It was agreed that the Mayor and Cr. Bateman represent the council. Accounts ■ passed for payment amounted to £151 7s 9d.
