Patriotic Funds Assist Ex-Servicemen
i > 1 -IIG t ■ . : lr4A;.\ 11 WELL1XGTOX, Oct. 12. • Twenty-one applicatious for assisf-anc-e from ex-servicemen, were declined on investigation by the welfare comnnttee of the- Xew Zealand Patriotic Fund Board during the past year, it was diselosed at a meeting of the board today. During the year, however, 103 grants and loans totalliug £12,396 were made to ex-servicemen for various purposes. Twenty-eight of the applications were for assistance to enable pevmanentiy disabled discliarged servicenien to purcliase cars. The welfare cominitteo report ed that these personnel reiuire.l transport to assist in tlieir rehabilitation or because they were so badlv disabled that a ear was necessarv to enable them to move around. Grants foi' the purchase of cars totalled £4307. The welfare funds also had been utilised to send a son of a discliarged serviceman to the United States for a spinal operation and to aid ex-servicemen 's children who liad contracted infantile paralysis. During the year, the committee reported to the board funds totalling £5000 derived from the estate of tlie late Mrs Helen Ross, of Wellington, Avere expended in special grants to exservicemen requiring assistance.
