Minister Can Settle State Mine Disputes
WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. "I must remind the Waikato mine riianagers' organisation that the settiement of industrial disputes at a State ntine is compleely within the competenee of the Minister and the Mines Department and managers of privatelv owned mines have no right to interfere or to object to the lawful settlement of snch a dispute by the proper authorities," said the Minister of Mines, Mr. MeLagan, in a "statement tonight. The Minister added- that it was com pletely incorrect for mine managers to assert that the dispute in the Waikato mines was settled without an inquiry and that the managers' organisation had made a completely baseless claim to Ite the bodv which should have handled the dispute. Mr. MeLagan said that in making the settlement proposal to the Miners' Union, he simply complied with the terms of the agreement that had been entered into by the Wilton mine management. The agreement gave the Miners' Union the unquestionable right to object to the use of maehines in any .pillar or section of pillars at any time, where they | considered safety to be endangered.
