Clean And Open Rugby Played During Season By Rahui, Nash Cup Winners
. ^ • - With club rugby for the seasoft now over, reference to the Rahui team which won the senior Nash Cup competition this year is timely. This success completed an unusual cycle. Although Rahui could not lower the colours of Shannon, the championship winners, until their third iand'hnal clash, they did in turn defeat each of the other teams in the district. Their wins were not the result of chance, each being earned the hard way.
The team was composed of young players, n» .ny of whom wore tliird grade jei^eys last season. Incidentally the coach is still under criticism for stepping them up too rapidly, but he cannot be denied the credit for some excellent displays by the side. The clean, open and at times inspiring rugby provided has made Rahui great favourites with fans-. They have not adhered to copybook rugby either arid many new moves exploited to advantage have also earned them commendation and delighted the spectators. Representative honours have been gained by six members of the side — Wallis, A. Hakaraia, J. Winterburn, McLeod, Merwood and Waaka. Each has given good service and the experience gained should mean that the side will be stronger in the future. In common with other combina-
scored for and 92 against. This is all the more pleasing when it is realised that of the 22 players who donned the club's jersey during the seasdti only four have piayed seriior football before. .Some grand backs have been fOund, with the position of fullback filled by W. Johnson, C. Taylor (one apearance only), B. Wallis, J. Casey, and A. Hakaraia, while McLeod, Waaka, Bradley, Merwood, Davis.and, last but by no means least, A. Winterburn, the invincible half, who bids fair to follow in the steps of Otaki's earlier protege, Vince Bevan, have given some thrilling backline exhibitions. The ever- green J. Winterburn (captain) has had valiant support .from hard-working forwards in A. Watt, Ted Fox, J. Spiers, G. Walker, P. Phillips, T. Smith, K. Wilton, D. Sriiith, C. Lethbridge and B. Greig.
