Scout's Gallant Action Wins Silver Cross
Received Thursdav 7 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 22. The Ohief Scout has av'arded the fJeor.t Silver Crosi® to Assistant Scout-n-aster Alfred Crowhurst, of the 12th Kpping Forest Group, Essex, in recognition of gallant action in protecting a young girl trappcd in the rollers of a fair roundabout last June. The girl, 12 year old, .Tean Mawer, fell from the roundabout and became trappcd between Ihe lixed platfonn and revolviug roundabout. ITeavy rubber rollers at intervals of a few feet, kepl running ove.r the child's legs. The roundabout was immediately switched off but continued to revolve for some minutes. Without a nioment's liestitatiou, Crowhurst raced to the child's side and forced his hands over her legs, allowing the roundabout to nass over his hands thus pro-
tecting the child 's legs from further injurv. Tlis hands were badly torn. The child's legs sustained very bad • lacerations but no bones were broken. It is considered that Crowhurst 's gallant action probably saved her from losing her limbs. At the time Crowhurst Was recovering from a fracture of hrs • fight arai which was still in a sling, the plaster having been renioved a few days before.
