Headmaster's Report To Committee

^ In his report to members of the Shannon Sc'hool Committee at the monthly meeting on Monday evening, the headmaster, Mr. F. ' O; Burtt, stated that at the end of July the schooL roll stood at 164 boys and 150 girls, a total of 314 pupils. There was no change in the roll nunibers during the month. Mr. Burtt pointed out that if the attendanee averaged 321 or more for the first four weeks of the third .term, the school will be up -graded a sub-grade and would be entitled to another male assistant teacher, while another classroom would also be necessary. The attendanee during the past month had been affeeted by sickness and had averaged 137 boys and 127 girls. At the beginning of the month Miss J. C. Davis commenced duty as a memtoer of the teaching staff. The dental nurse, ' Miss Gardner, had been absent since July 5 on account of illness. Through the generosity of Mrs. E. L. Hyde, the pupLs of the school were able to be addressed by patrol officers of the Wellington Automobile Association and shown road safety films in, the Druids' Hall. '.The children were also addressed by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. B. Clayton, 'the chairman of, the school committee, Mr. A. E. Jeffrey, Mr, C. M. Cronquest and Mr. J. T. Bovis. Mr. E. H. Barber, a member of the school committee was also present. The object of the gathering was to present the badges to the school road wardens, who were doing very important work for the younger pupils of the school. Arbor'Day was celebrated at the school on July 29 when committeemen, teachers and pupils assisted in the planting of 50 flowering native vrees in the school's native reserve. The trees were donated to the school by the Wellington Education Board and, being nurseryraised, should make good progress. They were a very welcome addition to the native seetion of the school garden. The July meeting of the Parent-Teachers' Association was addressed by the School Medical Ofilcer (Dr. Furness) and was* well attended by members. The next meeting was to be held next Monday and would take the form of a social evening. The school would close for vacation on Friday, August 19, and reopen on Monday, September 5. For the informationv of parents who,' had to plan annual holidays ahead, : the school would close for the Christmas vacation on Friday, December 16, and reopen on Wednesday, February 1, 1950. In the course of the month the seats on the north side of the school and in the shelter sheds had been repaired by the school caretaker, Mr. E. Chester, who had also completed the erection of shelves for the school library. The report was received by the committee, which also dealt with ' other matters pertaining to the administration of the school.
