Personal. Mrs. M. Waterson, of Carterton, is spendlng a few days as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A S. Hyde an-d Mrs. E. Retter, Senr., Newtown. Mr. Maurice Peach, of the State Hydro Department, is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Peach, Ballance Street. The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Fitzgerald have returned home after spending a holiday in the South Island. Mr. and Mrs. A. Curran, of Wellington, were weekend visitors to Shannon as the guests of Mrs. M. Curran, Snr., of the Albion Hotel. Mrs. R. Sauhders, Thompson Street, arrived home this morning after spending a few days in Auckland. One of Shannon's oldest identities, Mrs.. E. Crowther, of Clapham Street, celebrated her 91st birthday yesterday. The oocasion was marked by a family re-union, when relatives gathered to wish Mrs. Crowther a happy birthday. Among the visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Overon, Petone, • Mr. and Mrs. Webb, Wellington, Mrs. McVicar, Hutt, Mrs. Young and Mr. and Mrs. J. Crowther, Palmerston North, and Mr and Mrs. M. Tippler and Mrs. Jennings, Carterton. . The Referendum. Keen interest is being taken locally in the forthcoming referendum on compulsory military training. It is expected that the flocal poi! will ibe heavy and in order. that as many people as possible cast their vote, an organisation of supporters is arranging transport to and from the booth, which will be situated in the Council Chambers. Cars will be available during polling hours by ringing 'phone No. 51. Red Cross Appeal. The Shannon .Red Cross is appealing for strong winter boots and shoes.for boys and girls aged from one to 15 years for ihe children who recently arrived from overseas. Like all children, the youngsters at Pahiatua get wet feet, only they have no changes of footwear and few drying facilities. Around Shannon and district there must be many pairs of boots and shoes which have been outgrown but which are in good condition. Citizens are asked to assist the Red Cross in its worthy work by looking round and gathering up footwear and leaving it at the Council Chambers. The need is urgent as Pahiatua has been having this bad weather, too.
