School Jubilee Wind-up Meeting
The Shannon School Diamond Jubilee Committee recently held Its wind-up meeting at the school, with Mr. R. J. Law presiding. He made mention of the outstanding success of the celebrations and extended his sincere thanks to all memhers of the various committees ifor the very efficient manner in which they had carried out their duties. Mr. Law made special mention of the hard work of Messrs J. T. Bovis and L. J. Bowler, the •joint secretaries, and also paid a tribute to the committee responsible for the preparation of the souvenir booklet, remarking how well it had served its function. Mr. Law said that many old identities were very Lmpressed and expressed theirttappreciation to him for the way iri which the booklet had renewed so many pleasant memories. In conclu'ding his remarks, Mr. Law expressed special thanks to the Press and Mr. T. S. Downes for his untiring efforts in the • interests of the publicity for the jubilee. He then called upon Mr. Bovis to present the balance sheet. . Mr. Bovis said that it was indeed' a pleasure to advise that the celebrations had been very successful both socially and financiaily, the ba'ance sheet showing a credit balance of £159 12s Id. Mr. Bovis then dealt with the statement at length. Upon completion Mr. Law and various members of the committee expressed great pleasure at the financial result and extende'd congratulations to Messrs Bowler and Bovis for their efforts in drawing up the balance sheet. In his remarks. the chairman of the booklet committee, Mr. F. O. Burtt, thanked Mr. Law for the compliment paid to his committee and took the opportunity of thanking Mrs. K. Mitchell and Mr. T. S. Downes for the painstaking work they had done in connection with the preparation of the publication. The chairman of the banquet committee, Mr. R. R. Lind, thanked his team- of workers who had produced such a successful banquet. He also mentloned the appreciation felt by the committee, as well as by many resi'dents, of the action of Mrs. K. Mitchell in placing flowers in the cemetery and sending flowers to those who were ill and unable to attend the celebrations. In referring to the latter subject, Mr. Law said that he had been asked by Mr. R. Hook, who was unavoidably absent, to make his wishes of appreciation known to the meeting. Mr. K. Mitchell mentioned that letters of thanks had been sent to the following organisations and people who had helped with the celebrations: — Horo whenua A. and P. Association, Moutoa Hall Committee, trustees of Laurvigs' Hall, Shannon Dairy Company, the caterers, ■, Messrs . H. Beatscri, jr Ritchie afid j.- .Alqxdhcl'er^;; On^jbhb, motion of Mr. Bovis, it was resolvefl that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mr. J. A. Roach for his generosity in donating the jubilee cake. This was carried by acclamation. The chairman of the combined ball committee, Mr. F. J. Lucinsky, expressed his thanks to his committee for their magnificent cooperation and to all those who had
helped to make the ball such a successful function. Mr. Law paid tribute to the school committee, all the members of which had been well to the fore when there was work to be done in connection with the jubilee. Mr. K. 'Mitchell voiced the appreciation of the committee for the excellent direction and help given by Mr. Law as chairman of the committee. In replying, Mr. Law said that he ha'd felt it a great honour to be twice appointed chairman of the school jubilee committees. In conclusion, Mr. Law thanked Miss Crowther, who had made the posies giyen to the old identities and the nrst pupils, as these had been appreciated by those who had received them. It was decided that a notice of general thanks be published in the daily newspaper. During the general discussion which followed it was decided that a * memorial plaque he erected on the school gates. It was agreed that grants be made to the Shannon Women's Institute and the Shannon Badminton Club.for their assistance and, after the payment of a-ny small • aecounts which may not have been presented as yet, the remainder of the profits of the celebrations be handed over to the school committee towards the purchase of a motion picture soun'd projector for the school. The meeting closed ' with a vote of thanks to the chair.
