Hockey Association Has Successful Day
Hockey enthusiasts had an event of importance on their ealendar on Saturday, when the Horowhenua and Wellington representatives met on the Otaki Domain. The superior combina'tion of Wellington gave them a definite advantage and they emerged victors hy seven goals to nil. With the ground in excellent order, the best it had been during the two seasons since play was resumed in the district, a fairly fast game resulted. Although Wellington had slightly the better of the first spell, Horowhenua gave them plenty to do, and Fuller, Eagle and R. Windley in turn narrowly missed opening the scoring for the home side. Before the close of the spell Ferkett netted one for Wellington. Another six goals came Wellington's way in the second half , the Horowhenua goalie being up against it with the brilliant sun shining right in his net. Rowe, a dangerous man in the circle, although Cottle held him in the first spell, scored one early from a corner hit, and good following up saw Ferkett shoot another, with the same player netting the fourth. Woollerma.n, Ferkett and Rowe each shot one each late in the spell, and a game enjoye'd by players and spectators alike ended in favour of Wellington. Between 30 and 40 visiting players and supporters were the guests of the Horowhenua Hockey Association at afternoon tea in the Druids' Hall following the match. The vice-president, Mr. V. J. Cottle, tendered an apology for the president. He expressed the pleasure of the association at having the visitors with them. "Although they treated us harshly," said Mr. Cottle, "that's all in the game." Mr. Cottle pointed out that hockey in the district had been in recess for a long time, but that by trial and error and by play and defeat his association looke'd forward t.o again fielding a team that would measure up to the standard of the team that had defeated them today. "That is our aim," added the speaker, "and we wil1 meet you again, when it will be our turn." He extended the visitors an invitation to return, and concluded by thanking them for the experience given during the game. Thanks were also extended to Mr. T. V. Cahill for making a, lounge available for the visiting players. Mr. Rowe returned thanks, adding that the hospitality of Horowhenua was excellent and they would note it and copy it. His team had enjoyed the game and were feeling anything but secure at half -time. City players invariably di'd not understand what steps country clubs had to take to provide such games as had been enjoyed that day, and he expressed sincere thanks for the clean game played and praise for the keen spirite'dness of the Horowhenua association. Mr. Lawry, for the Wellington association, also thanked the hosts) and assured them that any steps' they took to put the district back in the major hockey class would be wholeheartedly supported by his body. He hoped this would not be the only game of its kind this season and concluded by thanking the ladies working in the background. Cheers for both sides and for the ladies were called for and given. The Curtain-raiser. Played early as a curtain-raiser to the rep. game, the ladies' match saw Rahui defeat Textiles (Foxton) by one goal to nil. The game was quite interesting and the pace
quickened after Miss June Te Tau notched Rahui's goal. Textiles made valiant efforts to equahse, but Rahui's full-backs proved very sound.
