Players In Stableford Game Undeterred By Rain
(By
Last Saturday's attendance at the Levin Golf Club's . links was affected siightiy by tlie weather, but a suprisingly large number of players faced the rain to p ay a stableford bogey. Apart from an Initial wetting and the heavy going, good conditions prevailed for the greater part of the afternoon> The heavy conditions under foot must have caused everyone a certain amount of trouble, as. the scoring generally was not good even by local standards. However, it must be expected that as we get into the real winter conditions, handicaps must be harder to play to. Brian Antcliff won the cpmpetition on the countback from A'f Bennett, after both had returned with 32 points. The other cards re.urned read as follows: — J. Corbishley 30, A. Hastedt and D. Sweetzer 29, H. D. Richards and B. J. Eagar 28, J. E. Fullarton and S. C. Franklin 27, W. G. Clark and J. A. C. King 26, F. Veysey, J. Tomlinson and H. Black 25, D. E. C.ark, W. L. Travers, F. Carrington and D. Tomlinson 23, G. Barclay, S. Atkins and S. G'edhiU 22, W. Ogier 21, J. Lovell and T. J. Coutie 18, W. G. Phillips 14, D. P. Todd 11. With The Top Dogs.
Since last reporting the activities of the top dogs, two challenges have been fought off by the hol'ders. Stuart Gledhiil and Harry McShane went out like lions and if they did not exactly come in like lambs, they did not quite make the grade. ALer a tight struggle, these two players hit off one up on the 18th, but Les Travers, who was substituting for Hugh Black, played a beautiful chip and putt to win the hole and halve the match. In this competition, a half .is not good enough, as the holders must be defeated over 18 holes. So Bert Richards and Hugh Black still carried the honours. This week that tougb . team, Cullen King and Stan Atkins, who at one time held the trophies for so long that everyone thought they would. be passe'd on to the King and Atkins families, tried conclusions With the holders. They discovered that, tough as they are, Richards and B ack are tougher, and were not given a chance, being defeated three and two. We did hear that Stan intends carrying a shovel in the bag in future games to dig the ball out of beavy lies. In the meantime, Black md Richards are still the top dogs. Next Weekend. Next weekend, the King's Birthday holiday, has been left free to enable members who are going away to do so without missing a loca competition. Quite a number are to visit Dannevirke and Feilding tournaments. For those at a loose end there is a two-day tournament at Otaki, with post-entries-for one or both days. All exservicemen, returned or home, are reminded of the one-day loiunainsnt to be he'd on June 26. The first show, held last year, was a great day and, with the experience gained then, the sub-com-mi..lee assures us that this years tournament will go down in history. All exservicemen go fers are eligible to compete, and for the trivial sum of 10s you are assured of the greatest day's fun you have ever had. The lunch alone is worth the money.
