The blockade agreement showed that the tirm yet reasonable policy the Western Powers had followed had been fully justified, said the British Foreign Secrerary, Mr. Ernest Bevin. in the House of Commons today. . "The Government will approach the new meetmg oi the Council of Foreign Ministers in the same spirit of firmness ana reasonableness. ... ,
"I am hopeful that a basis for an enduring setaement of the German probiem will be i'ound at the meetings We shall not abandon in the seitlement the principles for which we have always stood regarding Germany. _ "Now more than ever it is right to say how much this country owes to the .skill and devotion of the crews and ground staff, British, American and Commonwealth, who have taken part in this gigantic operation. It will continue until the situation has been finally cleared up." Mr. Bevin said that he would go to Berlin on May 7 to see the air lift in operation and convey the thanks and congratnlations of the Government to all concerned for what they had done. Mr. Churchill said that the air lift had shown a method of solving the deadlock and difficulty "far preferable to some others which might have been considered at one time or another." Mr. Churchill agreed that the war tension had lessened and urged united action towards the maintenance of peace.
