Poroutawhao W.I.'s Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the Poroutawhao "Women's Institute was held reqently. The president, Mrs. 'Carle welcomed all present, specially mentioning two new members, Mesdames McEwan and Littletsn. Appreciation of the loyal support given her during her two years of office was expressed by Mrs. Carle. She thanked all members and congratulated them on the achievements pf the institute during the past year. She made special mention of the organisation's effort in winning the shieid at the recent Horowhenua A. and P. show. This shieid was keenly competed for each year. She was proud of the work of the members, said Mrs. Carle. and of the way in which they had responded to her appeal and so made it possible for the shieid to be won. It was her pleasure and privilege, before leaving the chair, to present the poincs -prizes for the various monthly competitions during the year. Mrs. Spiers was then asked to comeJ forward and receive the prize for the most points gained. Sne also gained the award for the most points in the best bloom and best vegetable competitions and first equal with Mrs. Hanham in the best shrub competition. * •: In conclusion, Mrs. Carle thanked the committee and offieers and pre&ented flowers to Mesdames Penny, Sutcliffe, Tait, Vickers, Hanham, Spiers, Lumsden and Scott'. There was one member to whom congratulations were due, she commented. This was Miss Hewett, who had recently passed a high music examination, gaining her A.T.p.L. Members heartily applauded when Mrs. Carle offered her congratu'ations and presented Miss Hewett with a shoulder spray. ; Mrs. Penny then presented (Mrs. Carle with a gift from the members, a token of their appreciation, and expressed her regret that the president was unable to offer her-r self for re-election. Mrs. Lumsden presented the flowers. 1 Mrs. Carle thanked members for their gifts and before leaving the chair introduced the federation president, Mrs. Poweil, 'who con•dueted the election of offieers, which re'sulted as follows: — President: Mrs. Scott; secretarytreasurer: Mrs." Penny; , vicepresidents: Mesdames Carle and Sutcliffe; committee: Mesdames Vickers, Sloan, Green, Lumsden, Tait and Hanham. Mrs. Poweil then gave an interesting talk on institute matters. Mrs. Carle thanked her for the Address and presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. A delightful afternoon tea, Served 'by the hostesses, Mesdames Sloan and Taylor, brought a delightful afternoon to a close.
