CIIRLSTCHURCH, Feb. 9. For the lirst timo since Saturday, a temperature less than 90 degrees was recorded at Christchurch today. The maximum temperature recorded at tht Meteorological Observatorv shortly after noon, was degrees but temperatures in tlie eountry districts were still high and recordings to 100 degrees were made in inland parts of the proviuce. A light sea breeze in Christchurch reduced the temperature in tht afteriioon. The humiditv, though not high, was liigher than it has been. In an el'fort to cool the streets, city council trucks spriukled water about mid-dav but the water soon evaporated. Thousands again tlironged the beaches this eveuing, and during the day several large iirms elosed down for -an liour to allow enqilovees to bathe. Wheat is now coming in quickly but according to the wheat controller, Mr. R. McPlierson, it is in .excellent conditoin. Tonuitoes and stone fruit are ripening quickly. The extreme danger of fires was emphasised by -State Forest and rural tire oflicers but no serious fires in the. f eountry are yet reported. ' -
