Early Morning, Chase By Police Patrol Car
: CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 13. A police patrol car was siightly damaged when it rammed another car in Moorhouse Avenue after. a 60 miles an hour chase through tke city streets just before daylight today. The police arrested one' man then on a charge of cohverting the car. Two other men were arrested on the same charge in other parts of the city later^in the day. . A car owned by Mr. R. T. Hungerford and valued at £475, was reported to have been taken at 8.10 p.m. yesterday from Mont'real Street and a search was begun by the police patrol car manned by Sergeant D. Simpson and Constable P. Highsted. A car was noticed early this morning in Kilmore Street and was chased by the police car through Peterborough Street to Park Terrace, to Harper Avenue and through Hagley Park to Deans Avenue at high speed, the lirst car occasionaliy swerving. The first car maintained its. lead along Deans Avenue but the police car overtook it when it swung wide turning into Moorhouse Avenue. Three men jumped out and ran towards a wooded section of Hagley Park. A man was arrested by Constable Highsted. lle and Sergeant Simpson inade a quick search of that part of the park but uo other men were found. Sydney Sullivan, aged 24,° Desmond Patrick Egan, aged 24, and Gilbert jlligham, aged 22, were charged ih the Magistrate's Court this morning with the conversion of the car. They were remanded for a week, bail in eaeh case being granted in accused's own recognisance of £100 and a surety of £100.
