Proposal To Deport Aliens

CANBERRA, Octfl. 20. Sweeping new powers for the deportation of undesirable aliens, are provided in a Bill introdneed 'in Parliament today by the Minister of Immigration, Mr. Calwall. Whea'e the eonduft or character of an alien is brought into question. The Bill provides for an inquiry by a Supreme Court Judge acting as a commisisoner if it appears to the Minister that the conduct and character of an alien is such that he should not be allowed to remain in Australia, the alien may be summoned in writing to appear before the commissioner at a time and plaee speeified. The commissioner will not be bound by legal forms or by rules of evidence" but may secure relevant information in such manner as he thinks fit. The Commissioner will have power to order deportation and the Minister may order the alien to be kept in custody before departure.
