ON THE BOWLING GREEN
Large Attendance At Levin Club's Opening . The Levin Bowling Club held its opening on Saturday, when there was an excellent attendance of bowlers and la'dies. Visiting rinks were present from the Horowhenua Ladies' Bowling Club and Otaki Railway, Shannon and Levin Central Clubs. The president of the Manawatu Centre, Mr. P. O. Skoglund, was welcomed by the president of the club, Mr. C. Larsen, who thanked the green committee and all members who ha'd helped to prepare tne green and its surroundings for the season. Mr. Skoglund congratulated the club on the condition of the green and complimented it on its -choice of president. Mr. Larsen, as vicepresident of the Manawatu Centre was of great assistance to that body, he said. Mr. Skoglund .then presented Mr. R. S. Long, the winner of the 1947 junior championship singles, with the .centre's certiflcate, and :the - Levin Club with the Quadr'angular Shield, which it won last season. The president of the Levin Central Club, Mr. D. Hartstonge, presented the Barter . . Mfernorial Trophy to the Levin Club and expressed his congratulations and best wishes for the coming season* The deputy Mayor, Mr. D. J. Gardiner, apologised for the absenSe of the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Burdekin, and in a happy speech of congratulations and good wishes, declared the green open for the season. Mrs. Gardiner then . threw the flrst jack and Mrs. Larsen put up the flrst bowl. Unfortunately, the green' was too wet for play and afternoon tea concluded the ceremony. A pairs and rinks tournament will be held on Labour Day. Club competition entries will close on October 30.
