Man And Woman Wounded At Foxton

Suffering from wounds iuflicled by pellets from a double-barrelled sliotgun fired at comparatively short rauge, a man and woman were admitted to the Palmerston North Public Hospital from Foxton early on Saturday evening and it was later announced by the police at Palmerston North that a man had been arrested and will appear in tlie Magistrate's Oourt at Palmerston North this morning to faee two charges of attempted murder. The wounded persons are: — Sadie Davey, a married woman, aged about 35 years, living in Hartley Street, Manawatu Heads, who received wounds to the upper part of the body and the 1'ace. Her condition last niglit was reported to "be satisfactory. Thomas Sands, a fisherman, aged about 28, of Hartley Street, Manawatu Heads, pellet wounds to the body, condition satisfactory. The shooting occurred near a hotise iu Hartley Street at about 5.30 p.m. on Saturday. M rs. Davey went lo the liouse in Hartley Street in company with Sands. hira. Davey and Sands were seen iu the vard of the house by Ihe immediate ueighbour, Mr. (leorge Frederick Campion, a texlile factory worker, who was respousible for callmg the police and doctor. After the shootiug had occurred, ;Mr: Campion went lo a man near the frout of the liouse and began to struggle with liim for possession of the shotgun but the man, who vvas subsequently arrested, was persuaded to vield up the weapon vvithout violence to Mr. Camjiion who retained it j until the polico arrived. Sergeant V. Cosgrave and ('onstable R. I'nddle answered the eall and effecfed Ihe arrest, the inquiries later being taken over. by Senior Doteclive O. Power arid Deteetive-Sergeant J. H. Ally, of Palmerston North. ; After the two wounded persons had been examined and given immediale treatment by a doctor from Foxton, they were taken to the Palmerston

North Hospital by ambulanee. Hartley Street faces on to the river front at Manawatu Heads and at this time of the year is very littie used. Apart from Mr. Campion 's house, ,the residence where the shooting occurred is chiefly surrounded by unoceupied .baches. ; It is uiiderstood that when the arrested man appears in Court this morning the police will apply for a renvand.
