TRUE, NEVERTHELESS
•w — Mr. Saint Refers Again To Training Centre His remarks in support of the motion passed by the Manawatu provincial executive of Federated Farmers to give radio warning of boys absconding from the Levin Training Centre dealt with what had happened some years ago, and the incidents were true and correct, nevertheless. This comment was made today by Mr. S. C. Saint in reply to a statement last wee'k by the centre manager, ,Mr. E. J. Stanley. "Seemingly the manager has interpreted my remarks as applying to himself," said Mr. Saint, "and be'cause he has no knowledge of the incidents referred to by me, he has accused "me of making baseiess and vicious charges. Doubtless some of the cases could be quoted by many country residents and country storekeepers and although true they could not be regarded as baseless and vicious. For obvious reasons they would not be found in the records of the institution. ) "It is regrettable that a man in the position of manager of the institusion should rush into print be^fore making sure of his facts," added Mr. Saint. / Whether those responsible for the administration of the institution were called police, wardens, 9,ttendants or masters was beside the point, continued Mr. .Saint. They all had a duty to the 'public as well as to the institution, and in the cases he had quoted they had failed in that duty. "Judging by the number of people who have -commended me for my outspoken comment," concluded Mr. Saint, "I am satisfied that the general public are alive to the situation and that the manager has failed in his attempt to disci'edit me."
